Carbon Grooves

Over the last few months I've been occupied working on the first Whole-Play collaboration, Carbon Grooves. For the impatient types, here's the link:
And for the rest...
What is Carbon Grooves
Carbon Grooves is an online multi-disciplinar project combining algorhythmic composition (Whole-Play), sound design, digital art and data analysis.
How does it work? You choose a country, and hit play, easy! What will you experience? The music and visuals corresponding to the CO2 emissions in the last 3 days in that country.
The composition, the sound, the visuals, all respond to the evolution of the CO2 emissions, unfolding in the moment, unique for each day and country.
The tech
A number of technologies are involved in makling this possible.
- The composition. This is uses Whole-Play, specifically a customized version for the web called Whole-Play-Web. In turn, Whole-Play-Web relies in Chuck and WebChuck.
- The sound design. This is part of Whole-Play-Web, which provides a generic framework to create digital sounds with Chuck.
- The digital art. This is created with Javascript combining custom code with D3.js.
- The data processing. This uses PHP to pull the CO2 data from a public webservice.
About the team
And who are we? A funky team of three, spread around the world (New York, Melbourne, Menorca), who had a lot of fun working on the project, learnt a bunch of cool stuff, fixed a ton of bugs and merged our passion into Carbon Grooves.
- Gonzalo Pérez de la Ossa. Concept and composer.
Composer and computer programmer with a passion for exploring self-generative composition, blending creativity and code to create music that responds to context. That'll be me, the dude behind Whole-Play. - Glenn Mitchell. Visualization.
Moving pixels with code and numbers. Solving problems, writing code, and creating experiences for more than 20 years. A great mate of mine from Melbourne. - Martí de Castro. Sound design.
AI nerd and tech lover with keen interest in 3D technology. Enthusiastic about leveraging my programming and music skills for innovative sound design and music production. A long time Whole-Play collaborator, lliving the life in NY.
What's next?
We don't know yet, but this project has given us the methodology to combine all these technologies to produce audiovisual responses to data, and we'll surely continue to explore this area. Don't hesitate to contact me with any feedback or interest.
